ZŠ Londýnská in Prague, Czech Republic

Základní škola, Praha 2, Londýnská 34 is a public non-profit school for children of age 6 to15. There are 550 pupils attending our school and 53 members of pedagogical staff.

It is a part of obligatory primary education for all children in the Czech republic. The school accepts primarily pupils from the local area, according to the laws valid in our country, but due to the school’s position in the centre of the capital of the Czech republic, the pupils' backgrounds are very multicultural. The school is well known to accept children from diplomatic families as well as refugees, children from challenging social background or pupils in special needs. According to the financing, the children in special needs get a support of individual educational plan or personal assistant. The school is popular among parents not only for its willingness to accept all pupils but also because of its innovative and progressive approach.

The school cooperates closely with Charles University and helps students of Pedagogical faculty to observe teachers in their lessons and have a discussion afterwards. The school was a pilot school for framework educational programme being implemented into the Czech educational system a few years ago. This programme is based on integration of subjects into broader sections and enabling pupils to understand the world in a wide angle. The school’s position in primary education is important as well for applying verbal evaluation purely in all grades and evaluation by numbers normally used in other schools is applied only in case of changing schools. Targeting the individual learning needs of pupils and personalizing them is a method of taking care of gifted pupils as well as pupils with specific learning problems.

Apart from the chance to explore cultures of other European states and new experience with work on this kind of project, it will be another opportunity to develop ICT skills of our pupils in real life situations. Communication via eTwinning will be a new way for the children and in creating the outcomes they can use their skills with media with a particular reason. Communication with pupils of another mother tongue can be a motivation for deepening the skills of English language, perceiving our own culture and enriching the knowledge about other cultures. The multicultural aspect, the innovative approach and situations of real everyday communication in foreign language will be the most useful benefits for our pupils.

For teachers, the project will be beneficial in sharing ideas and teaching strategies in the first place. Visiting partner schools and observing the everyday life there, discussing it with colleagues from other European countries can enrich our pedagogical knowledge.
